Okatore Lodge • Namibia • Africa

Hunting details

Okatore forms part of the Khomas Hochland Conservancy, a combination of 20 game- and cattlefarms. Combined this forms an area of about 200 000 ha that is managed as a group. This makes it possible for larger groups to hunt together on Okatore. On demand guides from the neighbouring farms will assist with hunting and guiding. In Namibia, trophy hunting season lasts from 1 February until 30 November.

Single hunters hunt exclusively with the landlord. In larger hunting groups, a hunting guide is assigned to every two hunters. Hunting groups leave from the lodge to the hunting areas depending on the animals to be hunted. Non-hunting visitors are welcome to accompany the hunt. Once game is spotted the hunt continues on foot. Hunting from a hide is possible in certain instances.

At the bar, or over a wholesome meal, hunters can share their hunting experiences with the other guests. It is possible to exchange the hunting guide between different hunting groups. The field preparation of the trophies is done at the lodge. Head preparations can be exported by the hunter directly, with his luggage.

The Khomas-Hochland-Conservancy (KHC) currently comprises 20 Game- and cattlefarms with a combined size of about 200 000 ha, providing a habitat for more than 30 game and bird species.

Since its inception in 1992, the conservancy strives to attain the creation and maintenance of a healthy, rich and diverse game population that is able to roam freely without restrictions imposed by game fencing.

Khomas Hochland Conservancy

The multitudinous fauna and flora populations and their habitats are not only to be protected, but also nurtured and improved with the release of indigenous animals and the education of the local population and guests to the area regarding the status of the fragile environment and animals facing extinction.

The Ministry of Environment and Tourism supports and promotes the principles and aims of the conservancy and regulates the population after carefully evaluating the availability of fodder and the general number of animals. The quota of animals made available for hunting are based on these figures.
50 % of the KHC members are white Afrikaans speaking farmers, whilst the remainder consists of German speaking farmers. Currently no coloured farmers have shown interest in membership. A number of black hunting guides are however active in the KHC.

What advantages does this conservancy hold for the guest hunter? Within the KHC (s)he can choose from nine lodges, guest- and huntingfarms with varying levels of luxury. Each hunting guide is allowed to guide freely throughout the KHC after consulting with the other members. Additionally, larger groups can be accommodated on the KHC and hunt on the surrounding farms. Very strict controls are, however, enforced on trophy hunting and the age categories of animals hunted to ensure that the social structure of herds are maintained.
